How ignition interlock installation works
Getting an interlock installed is usually simpler than people expect. The whole visit typically takes an hour or two, and you drive away the same day with the device working. Here is the process from start to finish, in general terms.
Step 1: choose an approved provider
Florida authorizes specific vendors to supply and service interlock devices. Your court or DHSMV paperwork will point you to the approved options for your situation. Providers operate networks of service centers across the state, including most major metro areas, so there is usually a location within reasonable driving distance.
Step 2: schedule the installation
Call the provider or book online. Have your paperwork handy, because the provider needs to know who ordered the device and how the monitoring will be reported. Ask what documents to bring and how long the appointment will take for your vehicle type.
Step 3: the installation appointment
A trained technician connects the device to your vehicle's ignition wiring and mounts the handset within reach of the driver's seat. The work is designed to be reversible and does not permanently modify the vehicle. Interlocks can be installed in nearly any car, truck, or SUV, and providers can usually accommodate hybrids and push-button start vehicles as well.
Step 4: training
Before you leave, the technician walks you through using the device: how to give a proper breath sample, what the lights and prompts mean, how rolling retests work, and what to do if the device asks for service. Take this seriously. Most violations come from simple mistakes rather than actual drinking.
Step 5: service visits and removal
You will return to the service center at regular intervals so the provider can calibrate the device and download the usage log. When your required period ends and the court or DHSMV authorizes removal, the provider takes the device out and restores the original wiring.
